Corporate vision is the future tense of cultural-values
Core values are personal distillations of what you’ve learned to date. They form a perceptual screen through which you view and make sense of the world. A huge challenge for athletic coaches, orchestra leaders, and last but not least, business owners, is to develop a solid foundation of ‘cultural-values’ that will support a peak performance team. Winning in any arena, requires players to align their personal or core values with the team’s cultural values.

My experience suggests that values alignment comes only from rite of passage experiences—not trendy slogans or a knowledge based understanding. I have facilitated values alignment sessions with fortune list companies around the world. As an example; CEO Nolan Archibald and the presidents of all Black and Decker companies produced a powerful personal:cultural-values alignment in 2 ½ hours.
Alignment processes work when they deliver a rite of passage experience that bypasses the cognitive barriers of individuals—without challenging their personal or core values. Aligned cultural-values are used as a performance power tool—not as annual report or lobby wall adornments. They inspire (by focusing a share vision of the preferred future) and discipline (by creating an ethics platform that defines behavioral boundaries appropriate to peak performance team-play). Aligned companies win because: Vision is the future tense of values—where cultural-values and ethics are lived, employees inspire each other to deliver on the brand promise.
